Tech Tip: Rebooting iPhone 7

Have a brand new iPhone 7 and need to give it a reboot?

Well, if you’ve tried the long-standing method of holding down the Power/Lock button and the Home button, you may have realized that your iPhone 7 isn’t rebooting. While the iPhone 7 appears to have a Home button, it’s not actually a button at all. The Home button on the iPhone 7 is actually static. It is force sensitive and utilizes force touch in order to give it functionality.

So, how do you reboot your iPhone 7 without a real Home button?

Apple has assigned the previous reboot function of the Home button to the down Volume button. So, if you hold down the Power/Lock button along with the down Volume button for several seconds, you will see the Apple logo appear and your iPhone 7 will reboot like prior models.

One note though . . . When you hold down the down Volume button to reboot the iPhone 7, you will notice the ringer volume go down on the screen. This also means that when you complete the reboot, you will need to turn up your ringer volume back to the previous desired level.

Although it is not a big deal, it would be nice if iOS 10 recognized that you were attempting to reboot the phone by holding the two keys and not adjust the ringer volume settings. Perhaps Apple will adjust this functionality in a future iOS update or release.

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas . . .

Winter Village at Bryant Park

We may only be hours away from Halloween but it most certainly is starting to look a lot like Christmas in NYC.

Winter Village at Bryant Park opened yesterday and will hold an official opening celebration this Tuesday. Winter Village includes a variety of pop-up holiday shops and an ice skating rink as its centerpiece. Holiday shops include shops selling food, clothing, jewelry, candy & treats, artwork and a variety of other products & items. Winter Village at Bryant Park also holds it very own tree lightning ceremony each year.

Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street Herald Square has its Holiday Lane section set up on the 9th Floor. Macy’s holiday window displays should be unveiled in the next few weeks and the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be held and televised on Thanksgiving Day to kick-off the holiday season. You can also expect to see stores like Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales and other department and retail stores unveil their 2016 holiday window displays throughout the city in the coming weeks.

Holiday Lane at Macy’s Herald Square

Rockefeller Center opened their skating rink earlier this month and will hold their annual tree lightning ceremony, Christmas in Rockefeller Center, at the end of November.

You can expect to see stores putting up holiday displays, decorations and merchandise as well as promote sales and discounts over the next few weeks as we approach Black Friday, Cyber Monday and officially kick-off the holiday shopping season.

If you need to get yourself into the mood with some holiday music, check out iHeartRadio’s iHeartChristmas and iHeartChristmas Classics stations on iHeartRadio.com and on the iHeartRadio app.

Apple held its Special Event today in Cupertino to announce a new “TV” app as well as long-awaited updates to the MacBook Pro line.

Tim Cook kicked off the event with updates on iPhone 7, iOS 10 (an iOS 10.1 update was released earlier this week), Apple Pay with iPhone 7 in Japan, Apple Watch Series 2, watchOS 3 and Apple Watch Nike+ (available starting tomorrow).

“TV” App

Tim Cook announced a new app that will work across Apple TV, iPhone and iPad called “TV” which is meant to create a “unified TV experience” according to Cook. The “TV” app will consolidate all TV content across all your TV apps to work within the new “TV” app. Rather than accessing content across individual apps, “TV” app will be the one stop shop for all content across all those apps. With Siri, live content can be searchable by app or even content. The “TV” app will be available in the US via a software update released in December.

MacBook Pros

This week marks the 25th anniversary of Apple’s first notebook computer so how better to celebrate than to announce the first refresh of the MacBook Pro line in several years. Tim Cook invited Phil Schiller onto the stage to talk about the new MacBook Pros.

The new MacBook Pros come in two sizes, 13-inch and 15-inch models as well as two colors, silver and space gray. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is 14.9mm thin (17% thinner), 23% less volume, weighs 3 pounds (1/2 pound lighter than the previous generation) and the 15-inch MacBook Pro is 15.5mm thin (14% thinner), 20% less volume and weighs 4 pounds (1/2 pound lighter than the previous generation).

The new MacBook Pros include a Retina Display which is 67% brighter, has a 67% higher contrast ratio and has a wider color gamut with 25% more colors, a Force Touch trackpad which is 2x larger, a new keyboard which utilizes a 2nd generation butterfly mechanism, a new Retina Display multi-touch “Touch Bar” located above the keyboard (more on the Touch Bar coming up) and Touch ID with touch sensor built into the power button. The Touch ID is supported by the new Apple T1 chip with secure enclave to support Apple Pay. Touch ID can also be used for fast user switching.

The new Touch Bar replaces the traditional function keys but does a lot more. The Touch Bar adapts to the software application you are using which creates an incredible level of functionality from system controls (ex: brightness, volume) to formatting controls to even quick type suggestions and predictions. The new Touch Bar is even customizable.

The new MacBook Pros also feature new 6th generation Skylake processors, AMD Radeon Pro or Intel Iris graphics, faster SSDs (up to 3.1GB/s), an all-new speaker design which utilizes a smaller space but provides more volume (2x dynamic range), has an advanced thermal architecture, includes four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports which are backwards compatible with USB 3.1 Gen 2 and DisplayPort 1.2 and can be used for power, Thunderbolt, USB, DisplayPort, VGA or HDMI (and on the 15-inch, can support up to two 5K displays) and up to 10 hours of battery life.

While Apple will continue to offer the 13-inch MacBook Air, Phil Schiller also announced a new 13-inch MacBook Pro model with traditional function keys and two Thunderbolt 3 ports for avid MacBook Air users.

The three new MacBook Pro models will be available in the following standard base configurations and are customizable in a variety of configurations:

Apple’s October 27th Special Event

After much waiting and anticipation, Apple sent invites on Thursday to announce an Apple Special Event to be held in Cupertino on October 27th. Apple is expected to showcase new Macs which have not undergone a major overhaul in several years.

A newly redesigned thinner, lighter and more powerful MacBook Pro is expected to be announced at the event. The new MacBook Pros are rumored to come in two sizes: 13-inch and 15-inch models. They will feature Skylake processors (some rumors have even suggested newer Kaby Lake processors), a customizable OLED strip above the keyboard, Touch ID and USB-C ports. The new MacBook Pros will run on macOS Sierra.

There has also been speculation as to whether or not Apple plans to keep or phase out the existing MacBook Air series with some rumors suggesting a phase out of the 11-inch MacBook Air while retaining the 13-inch MacBook Air and other rumors suggesting the entire line will be discontinued.

The Mac Mini and high-end Mac Pro have also been subject of rumors as both lines have lacked a similar refresh in recent years. In addition, Apple discontinued their Apple Cinema Display earlier this year leading to rumors on whether or not Apple might be developing a new display to take its place.

From minor refreshes of the MacBook & MacBook Air at the beginning of the year to the release of iOS 10, macOS Sierra, Apple Watch Series 2, Apple AirPods and iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus, 2016 has been quite a year of product releases for Apple. How better to conclude 2016 than to have one more event dedicated to the release of long-awaited brand new Macs.

img_8062

Nationally syndicated radio morning show, Elvis Duran & The Morning Show celebrates its 20th Anniversary on the air this year. Over the course of this week, the show takes a journey down memory lane looking back at some of the highlights from the show over the past twenty years.

Over the years, the show has only gotten bigger and better due to the positive energy and atmosphere of the show, the unique style of the show, the comradery between the members of the morning show (past & present, in front of the mic & behind the scenes, on & off-air), and in no small part, because of Elvis Duran. Elvis Duran will be getting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017.

Elvis Duran & The Morning Show is a show that connects with its fans, listeners and audience treating them more like an extended family than simply as listeners. The show touches on topics that span across the spectrum and is not limited solely to music and entertainment. There is no other morning radio show like it.

Happy 20th Anniversary to Elvis Duran & The Morning Show and to the next 20 years!

Rick Astley is back . . . and better than ever!

80’s pop sensation, Rick Astley, rocked the house at The Town Hall in NYC this past Thursday night. Astley is promoting the US release of his new album, “50”, which came out on Friday. “50” is his first US album release in 23 years, first new album in 10 years and “50” has already been certified gold in the UK.

While “50” may sound a bit different than Astley’s old hits, “50” certainly does not disappoint and Astley’s signature voice and sound has only gotten better. Some of the incredible new songs on “50” include “Keep Singing”, “Angels on My Side” and “Dance”.

At The Town Hall, Astley performed his classic hits including “Together Forever”, “She Wants to Dance with Me”, “Cry for Help” and “Never Gonna Give You Up”, songs from the new album and some covers while throwing in a few jokes now and then.

It was one fantastic and incredible night and an absolute joy to watch and listen to Rick Astley and his band perform live.
